Lord Fairfax to Bartholomew Anderson - the old homestead
family cemetery

return

The Anderson family homestead encompassed a tract of land originally granted from Lord Fairfax to Bartholomew Anderson in 1752. This property, currently the Springfield Farm, is situated in the lower Shenandoah Valley of Clarke County, Virginia, an area now designated as Long Marsh Run Rural Historic District.

It has been nearly half a century since the last Anderson descendant owned the property. Today, the central portion remains as grazing land. However, there are still some remnants of that earlier time including foundation debris and the old well. Certainly the most prominent reminder of the old homestead’s past is the family cemetery.

Within this graveyard are a number of well-marked headstones scattered throughout the undergrowth. Some of the grave markers that lie on the ground yet are still quite legible. There are also numerous graves markers made of limestone and field rocks with no identifications. The cemetery perimeter is bound with wire fencing.
